One thing that I have slowly had to come to terms with when looking at Westmorland records is the relevance of parish and place. It seems to me that on the census returns for the birthplace sometimes they gave the parish - Orton or Kendal and other times they might use the actual place, of course they do not tell you which. My feeling is that our Garnetts did not live in the village of Orton itself. Although that was the church they used. From the limited research I did last time the baptisms for my own line show that John returned to Orton church to christen some of his children there while he lived in the parish of Crosby Ravensworth and Shap so they obviously felt a strong tie to Orton.
There was another 'Garnett family' in the parish records (Garnett married into the Holme line). At the moment I can find no link to our Garnetts and at present my feeling is that there is no link. Part of this reason is that they lived in Orton itself and I think they were 'rich' our Garnetts were 'poor'.
The names associated with our Garnetts are Bretherdale, Roundthwaite and Greenholme. The following interesting site shows where abouts they are :
