Parish records : Orton

The Mormons in the USA have copies of many parish records and have produced what is known as the IGI. It is important to remember that they do not cover all the churches. Many original parish records have been lost or destroyed. The IGI should be used as a finding aid as mistakes have sometimes been made. So it should always be an aim to track down the original parish records and have a look - hence the desire to visit Kendal records office. I have spent many an hour at Manchester central library squinting at films of parish records and I freely admit that this is the part that I am worst at. I find it really difficult to decipher old writing....and some of the films are very poor quality. Anyways back to the matter at hand. The above site links to the Mormons site, it is handy because you can go to a parish. So in this case go down the page to England, then Westmorland and then O for Orton. The C numbers refer to Christenings the M to Marriages. So clicking on C055671 (known as a batch number) will take you to christenings in Orton, put in Garnett and that will give you a list of Garnetts christened at Orton, click on a name to view parents.
