I am sorry, the dreaded has happened AGAIN !!!! I am sure that I am jinked....I am unable to get on the internet: am typing this from Manchester library. I have a man coming to look at it next wednesday, but I think it needs a new modem so will have to wait for him to get me one. Sincere appologies.

Following layout

I will now look at each of the children of Thomas1808, mainly using census records.

Parish records : Orton

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

The Mormons in the USA have copies of many parish records and have produced what is known as the IGI. It is important to remember that they do not cover all the churches. Many original parish records have been lost or destroyed. The IGI should be used as a finding aid as mistakes have sometimes been made. So it should always be an aim to track down the original parish records and have a look - hence the desire to visit Kendal records office. I have spent many an hour at Manchester central library squinting at films of parish records and I freely admit that this is the part that I am worst at. I find it really difficult to decipher old writing....and some of the films are very poor quality. Anyways back to the matter at hand. The above site links to the Mormons site, it is handy because you can go to a parish. So in this case go down the page to England, then Westmorland and then O for Orton. The C numbers refer to Christenings the M to Marriages. So clicking on C055671 (known as a batch number) will take you to christenings in Orton, put in Garnett and that will give you a list of Garnetts christened at Orton, click on a name to view parents. This is how I compiled the following lists.

I have coloured in green the one I think belong to our Garnetts.

Where is Orton?

One thing that I have slowly had to come to terms with when looking at Westmorland records is the relevance of parish and place. It seems to me that on the census returns for the birthplace sometimes they gave the parish - Orton or Kendal and other times they might use the actual place, of course they do not tell you which. My feeling is that our Garnetts did not live in the village of Orton itself. Although that was the church they used. From the limited research I did last time the baptisms for my own line show that John returned to Orton church to christen some of his children there while he lived in the parish of Crosby Ravensworth and Shap so they obviously felt a strong tie to Orton.

There was another 'Garnett family' in the parish records (Garnett married into the Holme line). At the moment I can find no link to our Garnetts and at present my feeling is that there is no link. Part of this reason is that they lived in Orton itself and I think they were 'rich' our Garnetts were 'poor'.

The names associated with our Garnetts are Bretherdale, Roundthwaite and Greenholme. The following interesting site shows where abouts they are :
http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/ukvillages.nsf/bx?open&s=villagebody2007&v=bretherdale%20head-cumbria

East Ward BMD

From 1837 people were suppose to register births, marriages and deaths. Two copies were made at the registry office - one that office kept and the other was sent to London. The London office has an index from which you can order certificates from the GRO. Some local registry offices have also made their indexes available online. Unfortunately Westmorland is not one of them. Sometimes mistakes were made. Some births were not registered especially in the earlier years as people thought that christening their children in church was the same as registering and also they were not punished for not registering. There are the ususal problems with name spelling and illegible writing !!!

The GRO indexes are available on this site :
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
It is free to use, you do not need to register.
Sheila, you need to click on the red box that says search down at the bottom.

So if you have a name on the census you can check the year of their birth on the birth certificate index.
With a marriage, by clicking on the last number you can see a list of possible partners so you might be able to work out a brides maiden name.
You can try to find out the year someone died.
You can see other possible relatives living in the same area.

The year is divided into four quarters - so if it says Dec. that means it was registered in October, November or December. If a birth was say registered in the October then the birth could have been in the September. You also need to know the district.

Orton is in the district called East Ward, of course it will also include other places. So I highlighted that in the list on the right.
Put the start date as Sept 1837 (earliest), finish date 1901. Put just surname as Garnett. Then press search. From that I compiled the following list.

Garnetts from Orton.

This is the family which I can say for some kind of certainty is 'our' family. Oral family history takes my branch back to Shap within the census years and from there I have tracked back through the census to this family.

Welcome to Wendy.

Welcome and a big thank you to Wendy. Wendy is a 'half' cousin - sorry do not know the correct terminology. Our common ancestor is Thomas 1808. Wendy has kindly shared information about the Thomas 1841 line. (I was very impressed by your family tree Wendy.)

Welcome to Sharon.

Welcome and thank you very much to Sharon. Although not a 'Garnett' herself, Sharon has shared some interesting information about her Uncle Christopher 1887.

Introduction

Welcome.

First off I do not claim to be an expert in this family history search, and realise I make mistakes so if you spot one or would like to challenge my ideas please feel free I shall not be offended.

I know I do all the things we are not suppose to do - I am not organized, I jump from one family to another, I go forward and sideways and most importantly I am guilty of making ASSUMPTIONS - if I was rich and free to go out and about to record offices etc. I would do it the proper way finding certificates etc. but I am not so have to make do with what I can.

I have put on here a lot of the ways I use Internet sites - this is so my dear dear sister (hello Sheila) can follow what I have done and see if she can get the same results as myself. As she does not have access to Ancestry.co.uk I will just post findings from the census for her to see.

I always like to acknowledge people for passing on information - this I shall do just using christian names (I am paranoid about identity fraud). Also no information about living people in such a way as they could be identified. So on that note the time period being studied is loosely before World War 1.

I am afraid I do not have a "tree" anywhere on the Internet. My research is an ongoing although slow affair - I must admit I am less interested in dates etc. and more interested in the lives of my ancestors so I frequently am led astray by social history. Another area of knowledge I am slowly slowly building up is geography. So you may find many ramblings and not relevant writings on here feel free to skip read them if you are not interested.

Why a blog? well it is very easy to go back and update information. I can more easily put down explanations and I can easily erase. I am not very good at computers. (In fact I am frightened of them.) Some of the information I shall post is of Garnett families who we are not related to (or more accurately can find no evidence to link us yet) so that they can be eliminated from our line.

As many of the christian names are used often for example Thomas, I shall put the year of birth after to make clear which one it is.

Sometimes I may duplicate information in different parts of the blog, this is because the only thing I dislike about a blog is it is difficult to jump about from one part to another when it gets large.
